For example, our annual reviews aren’t just a checklist exercise. Our consistent and equitable approach to reviews allows us to differentiate and reward our employees for their contributions. It’s not just once a year, either — employees meet with their managers throughout the year for ongoing coaching, feedback and alignment. Employees record their skills, interests and specific development goals in Career Profiles in Workday, providing a framework for career growth. And we’ve moved beyond role-specific development to a skills-based approach, unlocking new opportunities for growth and internal mobility aligned with employees’ talents and passions.

We partner with employees to realize their potential by investing in them from the start. Learning at AppFolio is made up of three focus areas: professional development, accessible leaders, and business expertise.

Professional development: Continuous learning is a big part of what it means to be an AppFolian. From on-demand learning to our quarterly AppFolio Learns series that offers a deep dive into various topics, AppFolio ensures that all employees have access to robust learning opportunities. We also provide top-notch leadership development programs that strengthen skills, provide industry context and fuel the performance and growth we foster in all AppFolians.

Accessible leaders:  We believe in facilitating robust, open communication between employees, managers and executive leadership. We also hold regular “Around the Watercooler” events that provide all employees with the opportunity to meet with a senior leader in a small group setting to ask questions, build trust, and promote strategic alignment.

Business expertise: Another ingredient of the learning recipe at AppFolio is to ensure our employees are experts in our business and industry. We do this from the start with our onboarding program, giving new hires training on customer experience and current markets. From there, departments run more specific training, followed by our Product Expert training program, which gives team members a deeper understanding of the property management industry and the philosophy behind product development. Finally, our Engineering & Product Development teams also provide training through a collection of curated and interactive sessions designed to help new engineering hires get acclimated, as well as bi-weekly Tech Talks, open sessions where anyone on the team can share what they’re working on.

Positive impact on customers and communities

Impact is a key part of working at AppFolio. We are creating a world where living in, investing in, managing, and supporting communities feels magical and effortless, freeing people to thrive. 

That starts with making a positive impact on our customers. We pride ourselves on 100% customer focus in everything we do, and it shows. All AppFolians fulfill a “Customer Connection” goal each year, empowering them to find ways to connect and engage with customers on their own. We regularly share customer stories and wins with employees, and we regularly invite customers to present at our AppFolio all-hands company meetings. 

Our impact also extends to the communities we live and work in. Since 2022, AppFolio has partnered with Habitat for Humanity because we believe that affordable housing plays a critical role in strong and stable communities. We support Habitat with employee fundraisers, group service activities, and a corporate match. 

AppFolio’s Give Back Committee plans volunteer opportunities to help AppFolians use their eight paid hours of Volunteer Time Off each year. Recent events have involved packing hygiene kits for Ukraine, gleaning fruit for local communities, and organizing book drives.

We also offer the AppFolio Impact Center, an internal platform through which employees can donate money to the cause of their choice, amplify their impact with a company match—up to $300 annually—and find volunteering opportunities in their communities.

AppFolio’s culture of connection

We foster an inclusive and connected culture that fuels high performance, innovation, and collaboration, no matter where or who we are. In fact, 95% of employees say people care about each other here.

While our dynamic office hubs in Santa Barbara, San Diego, Dallas, and Columbus act as centers for culture and collaboration, we also deliver a world-class work experience no matter the work location. Recently, we introduced five Remote Hub Cities (San Francisco, Denver, Chicago, Atlanta, and Washington, DC). These cities are home to many AppFolians, and are key areas for us to attract large talent pools and fuel in-person connection

So far in 2025, AppFolio has already introduced co-working and connection opportunities in each of our Remote Hub Cities, connecting over 80 remote employees. 

 

As one employee put it in our annual engagement survey, “I am glad that AppFolio invests in time to connect — both in the office hubs and remotely. It is nice that there is a mix of larger events where we can get together as a broader organization, and smaller events to connect as a team / office hub.” 

 

AppFolio Voices is what we call Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), in recognition of our intention for AppFolians’ voices to be heard far and wide, helping to shape our path forward. These groups foster an engaged and inclusive culture where each AppFolian is respected and appreciated.
